FISHERMEN in the capital are gearing up for an all-out war on the invasive lionfish this weekend.
For the second summer in a row, the Lionfish Control Project will offer $3,000 in cash prizes for spearing the single biggest or smallest, or the most lionfish, while providing insight into how Bahamians can counteract the problems that lionfish pose to the local marine environment.

July 16 fish report
The month-long Bob's Bait Catfish Derby kicked off July 1 with a $100 cash prize going to the angler who weighs in the biggest catfish at Bob's Bait in Bakersfield during July. The current leader is David Kiel, Bakersfield, with a 6-8 cat caught from the aqueduct.

Irvine Lake anglers scoring on crappie, bass and catfish
Both the crappie and catfish action at Irvine Lake improved this week, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The catfish are still holding very tight to the brush," observed Getty. "Best bait for daytime catfish anglers has been the marshmallow/mealworm combo; they are only biting on mackerel at night."

Colo. record catfish caught at Aurora Reservoir
An avid angler made the catch of his life last month at Aurora Reservoir.
Daris McKinnon of Parker reeled in a 35-pound, 8-ounce channel catfish on June 28, which was confirmed a new state record by the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
